Why this priority?
HWW is aware through feedback from local people, our involvement in Quality Monitoring and Risk Summit meetings and local and national media coverage that patients are being nursed in the corridor areas of the Accident and Emergency Department and Medical Assessment Unit at the Worcestershire Royal Hospital and, occasionally, the Alexandra Hospital.
What are we doing?
HWW undertook 44 unannounced Enter and View visits to both the hospitals during the period 13th February – 26th March 2017.
We did not see any patients in the corridor at the Alexandra Hospital. We spoke with 119 patients at the Worcestershire Royal Hospital (WRH) about their experience of being nursed in the corridor areas. We asked people about their care, the environment, privacy and dignity and the information they have been given about the corridor areas and waiting times. We made 38 recommendations for improvement based on the findings of our Survey. The Hospital produced an Action Plan stating what it would do in response to our recommendations.
In April 2018 we carried out a further 6 unannounced Enter and View visits to the A&E Department at the WRH. The purpose was to follow up on the implementation of our recommendations as set out in the hospitals Action Plan.
In September 2019 we carried out a one off unannounced Enter & View visit to the A&E Department of the WRH. The purpose was to follow up on the implementation of our recommendations as set out in the hospitals Action Plan.
Reports of our visits and the responses that we received are available through the link below.
